Concept / Meaning
Situational Concept: In Japanese social etiquette, invitations are framed as negative questions (〜ませんか) so as not to pressure the listener. When accepting, say 「いいですね。行きましょう」 (That sounds nice! Let’s go!).
Japanese Form
A: 土曜日 いっしょに 京都へ 行きませんか。
B: いいですね。行きましょう。
A: じゃ、10時に 京都駅で 会いましょう。
English Meaning
A: Won’t you go to Kyoto together on Saturday?
B: Sounds great! Let’s go.
A: Well then, let’s meet at Kyoto Station at 10:00.
Nepali Meaning
A: शनिबार सँगै क्योटो जाँदैनौं र?
B: राम्रो विचार! जाऔं न त।
A: ल त्यसो भए, १० बजे क्योटो स्टेशनमा भेटौं है।
Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- Invite: [Time] [Activity / Place] へ / を [Verb-stem] ませんか.
- Accept: いいですね。ぜひ [Verb-stem] ましょう.
- Decide meeting time & place: [Time] に [Place] で 会いましょう.
Formation
| Function | Japanese Form | Romaji | Meaning (Nepali) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Invitation | 飲みませんか | Nomimasen ka | पिउँदैनौं र? (निम्तो) |
| Suggestion | 飲みましょう | Nomimashou | पिऔं न त! (प्रस्ताव) |
| Acceptance | いいですね | Ii desu ne | राम्रो विचार! |
| Meeting | 駅で 会いましょう | Eki de aimashou | स्टेशनमा भेटौं |
Usage
Used when asking classmates for lunch, inviting coworkers for a drink after work (飲み会 – Nomikai), and planning weekend trips.
Important Notes
- Never use ‘〜ませんか’ to force someone; leave room for them to politely decline.
- When proposing a specific time, use particle に: 10時に.
- When designating a meeting place, use particle で: 京都駅で.
Exceptions
Between very close friends, casual volitional forms (行こう, 食べよう) are used instead of 〜ましょう.
Common Mistakes
Do not say ‘〜ましょうか’ when you mean ‘Let’s do it together!’ (That means ‘Shall I do it for you?’ or ‘Shall we?’). Use ‘〜ましょう’ for positive agreement.
