Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 14, we master the foundational grammar structures: 動詞の3グループ / て形 (Te-form conjugation rules) / Vてください (指示・依頼) / Vています (動作の進行) / Vましょうか (申し出) / S1が、S2. For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of 動詞の3グループ / て形 (Te-form conjugation rules) / Vてください (指示・依頼) / Vています (動作の進行) / Vましょうか (申し出) / S1が、S2.
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Concept / Meaning

The pivotal milestone of beginner Japanese: verb group classification (Group 1 / 2 / 3) and te-form (て形) conjugations. Using te-form for polite requests (〜てください), actions currently in progress (〜ています), and offering assistance (〜ましょうか).

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Verb Groups:
  • Group 1 (五段 – Godan): Verbs ending in -i sound before ます (e.g. 書きます, 飲みます, 買います).
  • Group 2 (一段 – Ichidan): Verbs ending in -e sound before ます (食べます, 教えます), PLUS some special -i sound verbs (見ます, います, 起きます, 借ります).
  • Group 3 (不規則 – Irregular): Strictly two verbs: します (and noun+します) and 来ます (きます).
  1. Te-Form Conjugation for Group 1:
Polite instruction or request (‘Please do’).
  4. Vています: Action currently happening right now (‘am/is/are doing’).
  5. Vましょうか: Offering to help the listener (‘Shall I carry your bag?’).

Formation

Group Verb (ます) Dictionary sound Te-form (て形) Meaning
1 (い・ち・り) 待ちます mach-i 待って (matte) wait
1 (み・び・に) 読みます yom-i 読んで (yonde) read
1 (き) 書きます kak-i 書いて (kaite) write
1 (ぎ) 急ぎます isog-i 急いで (isoide) hurry
1 (Exception) 行きます ik-i 行って (itte) go
2 食べます tabe- 食べて (tabete) eat
2 (Special -i) 見ます mi- 見て (mite) look/see
3 します / 来ます shi / ki して / 来て (きて) do / come

Usage

The foundational bedrock of Japanese. Used for asking someone to wait, stop, speak slowly, opening doors, offering help, and describing continuous ongoing actions.

Important Notes

  1. ⚠️ 行きます (ikimasu) is an exception! It conjugates to 行って (itte), NOT iite.
  2. Verbs like 起きます (wake up), 借ります (borrow), 見ます (see), 浴びます (take a shower) look like Group 1 because they have an -i sound, but they are grammatically Group 2!
  3. Do not use ‘〜てください’ to superiors as an order. For superiors, use ‘〜て いただけませんか’.

Exceptions

行きます → 行って (NOT 行いて). 来ます (kimasu) changes its root vowel in te-form to 来て (pronounced kite).

Common Mistakes

Nepalese learners often make errors with Group 1 te-forms (e.g. saying kakite instead of 書いて, or machite instead of 待って). Memorize the rhyming song: i-chi-ri tte, bi-mi-ni nde, ki ite, gi ide, shi shite!

  • Correct Form: 東京へ 行って ください。(Itte kudasai)
  • Why: ‘行きます’ is an irregular phonetic exception among Group 1 verbs; it becomes ‘行って’.
