Introduction

In Minna no Nihongo Lesson 12 Conversation, we explore Kyoto’s legendary Gion Festival (祇園祭 – Gion Matsuri). You will learn how to ask friends about their trips and past experiences using どうでしたか (How was it?), describe atmospheres with past tense adjectives (とてもにぎやかでした – It was very lively; 人が多かったです – There were a lot of people), and compare two places using 〜より〜のほうが (A is more … than B).

Learning Objectives

  • Ask and answer questions about past vacation and festival trips.
  • Master past tense of i-adjectives (-katta desu) and na-adjectives (-deshita).
  • Express comparative impressions using 〜のほうが and 〜より.
  • Describe festival crowds, food stalls, and traditional sights naturally.
  • Solve 20 JLPT-format MCQs on past descriptive conversation and comparisons.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Situational Concept: When returning from a trip or weekend outing, colleagues ask: 「〜はどうでしたか」 (How was ~?). Answer using past adjectives and provide vivid details on whether it was crowded, fun, tiring, or delicious.

Japanese Form

A: 祇園祭は どうでしたか。

B: とても にぎやかでした。

A: そうですか。人は 多かったですか。

B: ええ、とても 多かったです。でも、楽しかったです。

A: 京都と 大阪と どちらが おもしろかったですか。

B: 京都の ほうが おもしろかったです。

English Meaning

A: How was the Gion Festival?

B: It was very lively!

A: I see. Were there a lot of people?

B: Yes, there were a great many people! But it was very fun.

A: Between Kyoto and Osaka, which was more interesting?

B: Kyoto was more interesting.

Nepali Meaning

A: गिओन चाडपर्व (फेस्टिवल) कस्तो रह्यो त?

B: एकदमै रमाइलो र चहलपहलपूर्ण थियो!

A: ए हो र? मान्छे धेरै थिए?

B: हजुर, एकदमै धेरै मान्छे थिए। तर धेरै रमाइलो भयो।

A: क्योटो र ओसाका मध्ये कुन चाहिँ बढी चाखलाग्दो थियो?

B: क्योटो चाहिँ बढी रोचक थियो।

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Ask past impression: [Event / Place] は どうでしたか.
  2. Na-adjective past: [Stem] でした (にぎやかでした / しずかでした).
  3. I-adjective past: [Drop い] + かったです (楽しかったです / 多かったです).
  4. Comparison between two: A と B と どちらが [Adj] ですか -> A のほうが [Adj] です.

Formation

Adjective Type Present Polite Past Polite (Nepali)
I-adj (Fun) 楽しいです 楽しかったです (रमाइलो भयो)
I-adj (Crowded) 人が多いです 人が多かったです (धेरै मान्छे थिए)
I-adj (Good) いいです よかったです (राम्रो भयो)
Na-adj (Lively) にぎやかです にぎやかでした (चहलपहल थियो)
Na-adj (Quiet) 静かです 静かでした (शान्त थियो)

Usage

Used in casual hallway chats, lunch breaks, language school reviews, and tourist discussions.

Important Notes

  • The irregular adjective いい (good) becomes よかったです in the past tense, never ‘iikatta desu’.
  • When comparing two items, use どちら (which of the two), not ‘dore’ (which of three or more).
  • In Japanese culture, bringing back souvenirs from trips (お土産 – Omiyage) for colleagues is expected.

Exceptions

When describing weather, ‘Kino wa ame deshita’ uses noun ame + deshita.

Common Mistakes

Saying ‘楽しかったですでした’ or ‘にぎやかかったです’. Keep i-adj and na-adj past rules strictly separate!

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

  • Correct Form: Say ‘よかったです’ (Yokatta desu).
  • Why: ‘いい’ irregular adjective always conjugates from its classical root ‘よい’ (योक्कात्ता देसु).

  • Incorrect: Saying ‘京都が大阪よりおもしろい’ without ‘no hou ga’.
  • Correct Form: Say ‘京都のほうが 大阪より おもしろいです’.
  • Why: ‘のほうが’ clearly emphasizes the winning side of the comparison.
