Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 8, we master the foundational grammar structures: い-形容詞 / な-形容詞 / N は Adj です / Adj + N (名詞修飾) / とても / あまり〜ない / どうですか / どんな N. For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of い-形容詞 / な-形容詞 / N は Adj です / Adj + N (名詞修飾) / とても / あまり〜ない / どうですか / どんな N.
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Japanese adjectives are divided into two distinct morphological classes: i-adjectives (い形容詞) and na-adjectives (な形容詞). Covers their non-past polite affirmative and negative conjugations, noun modification, adverbs of degree (とても, あまり), and asking descriptive questions (どうですか, どんなN).

Japanese Form

【い形容詞 肯定】N は [Adj-い] です

【い形容詞 否定】N は [Adj-いくない] です

【な形容詞 肯定】N は [Adj-な] です

【な形容詞 否定】N は [Adj-な] じゃありません

【名詞修飾】[Adj-い] N / [Adj-な] な N

【程度】とても + 肯定 / あまり + 否定

【印象質問】N は どうですか

【性質質問】N1 は どんな N2 ですか

English Meaning

N is [Adj] / N is not [Adj] / [Adj] Noun / Very [Adj] / Not very [Adj] / How is N? / What kind of N2 is N1?

Nepali Meaning

N [विशेषण] छ / N [विशेषण] छैन / [विशेषण] नामपद / धेरै [विशेषण] / खासै [विशेषण] छैन / N कस्तो छ? / N1 कस्तो खालको N2 हो?

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. い-adjectives end in ‘い’ (e.g. 高い, 熱い, おいしい). Negative replaces ‘〜い’ with ‘〜くない です’ (e.g. 高くないです – not expensive).
  2. な-adjectives drop ‘な’ when placed before ‘です’ (e.g. 静かです – is quiet). Negative is ‘〜じゃありません’ (e.g. 静かじゃありません – is not quiet).
  3. Modifying a Noun:
  • い-adj directly attaches to noun: 高い 山 (high mountain).
  • な-adj attaches to noun WITH ‘な’: 親切な 人 (kind person), 有名な 町 (famous town).
  1. いい (good) is irregular: Negative is よくない です (not ikunai!).
  2. とても (very) modifies positive statements: とても 忙しいです.
  3. あまり (not very / not much) MUST be followed by a negative ending: あまり 忙しくないです.
  4. ‘どうですか’ asks for an opinion/impression (‘How is it?’). ‘どんな N ですか’ asks for category or qualities (‘What kind of N is it?’).

Formation

Adjective Class Affirmative (हो/छ) Negative (होइन/छैन) Noun Modification
い-Adj (熱い – hot) 熱い です (Atsui desu) 熱くない です (Atsukunai desu) 熱い お茶 (Hot tea)
い-Adj (いい – good) いい です (Ii desu) よくない です (Yokunai desu) いい 本 (Good book)
な-Adj (暇 – free) 暇 です (Hima desu) 暇 じゃありません (Hima ja arimasen) 暇な 日 (Free day)
な-Adj (きれい – pretty) きれい です (Kirei desu) きれい じゃありません きれいな 花 (Pretty flower)

Usage

Used to describe weather, food taste, city atmosphere, prices, school life, and personal impressions of Japan and Japanese people.

Important Notes

  1. ⚠️ きれい (pretty/clean) and 有名 (famous – ゆうめい) end in ‘い’ in sound, but they are grammatically な-adjectives! Say ‘きれいな 人’, ‘きれいじゃありません‘.
  2. When joining two positive sentences, use そして (and): 日本の 食べ物は おいしいです。そして きれいです.
  3. When joining contrasting sentences, use が (but): 日本の 食べ物は おいしいですが、高いです.

Exceptions

いい (good) always conjugates from its classical root ‘よい’: 否定 = よくない, 過去 = よかった, 過去否定 = よくなかった.

Common Mistakes

Never say ‘きれいじゃない です’ as an i-adjective (kireikunai is completely wrong!). Never forget ‘な’ when modifying nouns with na-adjectives (e.g., ‘しんせつ人’ is incorrect; must be ‘しんせつな人’).
