Introduction
In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 5, we master the foundational grammar structures: Place へ 行きます・来ます・帰ります / どこ[へ]も 行きません / Vehicle で 行きます / Person と 行きます / いつ / 日付 (Days of month). For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the core function of Place へ 行きます・来ます・帰ります / どこ[へ]も 行きません / Vehicle で 行きます / Person と 行きます / いつ / 日付 (Days of month).
- Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
- Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
- Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
- Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- Particle ‘へ’ is written with hiragana ‘he’ but pronounced ‘e’ when indicating direction/destination.
- 行きます (ikimasu) = to go (moving away from speaker’s location).
- 来ます (kimasu) = to come (moving towards speaker’s location).
- 帰ります (kaerimasu) = to return home, to one’s home country, or base.
- Particle ‘で’ marks the means or vehicle of transportation (e.g. 電車で, バスで, 飛行機で).
- ‘歩いて’ (aruite – on foot) is a verb te-form and NEVER takes ‘で’.
- Particle ‘と’ marks the person/animal you do an action with (e.g. 友達と – with a friend). ‘Alone’ is ‘1人で’ (hitori de) without ‘と’.
- Total negation of destination: ‘どこ[へ]も 行きません’ (I am going nowhere).
Formation
| Movement | Destination (へ) | Means (で) | Companion (と) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 行きます | 東京へ 行きます (Go to Tokyo) | 新幹線で 行きます (Go by Shinkansen) | 友達と 行きます (Go with a friend) |
| 来ます | 日本へ 来ました (Came to Japan) | 飛行機で 来ました (Came by plane) | 家族と 来ました (Came with family) |
| 帰ります | うちへ 帰ります (Go home) | 歩いて 帰ります (Walk home) | 1人で 帰ります (Go home alone) |
Usage
Used for travel plans, commuting to school/work, describing how and with whom you came to Japan, and scheduling future trips.
Important Notes
- Dates of the month from 1st to 10th are irregular: 1日 (ついたち), 2日 (ふつか), 3日 (みっか), 4日 (よっか), 5日 (いつか), 6日 (むいか), 7日 (なのか), 8日 (ようか), 9日 (ここのか), 10日 (とおか), 14日 (じゅうよっか), 20日 (はつか), 24日 (にじゅうよっか).
- ‘いつ’ (when) does NOT take particle に.
Exceptions
When walking, say ‘歩いて 行きます’ (aruite ikimasu). Never say ‘歩きで’ or ‘歩いてで’.
Common Mistakes
Do not write ‘え’ for destination; you MUST write ‘へ’ and pronounce it ‘e’. Do not say ‘1人と’ for alone; say ‘1人で’.
