Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 4, we master the foundational grammar structures: 今 ~時 ~分 です / Vます・Vません・Vました・Vませんでした / Time に V / ~から ~まで / N1 と N2. For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of 今 ~時 ~分 です / Vます・Vません・Vました・Vませんでした / Time に V / ~から ~まで / N1 と N2.
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Introduces expressing the current time, hours and minutes, the polite verb tense system (present affirmative/negative, past affirmative/negative), specific time particle に, time ranges (kara/made), and conjunction と.

नेपाली व्याख्या:

यस पाठमा घडीको समय (अहिले कति बज्यो, कति मिनेट गयो), क्रियापदका चार आधारभूत रूपहरू (गर्छु, गर्दिनँ, गरें, गरिनँ), समय जनाउने Particle ‘に’, समयको सीमा ‘देखि… सम्म’ (から… まで), र दुई नामपद जोड्ने ‘र’ (と) सिकाइन्छ।

Japanese Form

【時刻】今 ~時 ~分 です

【動詞現在肯定】Vます

【動詞現在否定】Vません

【動詞過去肯定】Vました

【動詞過去否定】Vませんでした

【時間点】Time に V

【期間】Time1 から Time2 まで

【並列】N1 と N2

English Meaning

It is [Hour]:[Minute] now / Verb (present/habitual) / Do not verb / Verbed (past) / Did not verb / At [Time] verb / From [Time1] to [Time2] / N1 and N2

Nepali Meaning

अहिले [बजे] [मिनेट] गयो / [काम] गर्छु / गर्दिनँ / गरें / गरिनँ / [समय] मा गर्छु / [समय१] देखि [समय२] सम्म / N1 र N2

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Hours use ‘〜時’ (ji): 1時 (ichiji), 4時 (yoji – ⚠️ not yonji), 7時 (shichiji – ⚠️ not nanaji), 9時 (kuji – ⚠️ not kyuuji).
  2. Minutes use ‘〜分’ (fun/pun): 1分 (ippun), 3分 (sanpun), 5分 (gofun), 10分 (jippun/juppun), 30分 (sanjippun / 半 – han).
  3. Japanese verbs conjugate into 4 polite forms using ‘ます’:
  • 現在肯定 (Present/Future): 起きます (okimasu – उठ्छु)
  • 現在否定: 起きません (okimasen – उठ्दिनँ)
  • 過去肯定 (Past): 起きました (okimashita – उठें)
  • 過去否定: 起きませんでした (okimasen deshita – उठिनँ)
  1. Particle ‘に’ is attached to specific numeric times (e.g., 6時に, 日曜日に). Do NOT use ‘に’ with relative time words (今日, 明日, 毎朝, 今).
  2. ‘から’ = from (देखि); ‘まで’ = until/up to (सम्म).

Formation

Tense Affirmative Negative Meaning
Present / Future 働きます (hatarakimasu) 働きません (hatarakimasen) I work / I do not work
Past 働きました (hatarakimashita) 働きませんでした (hatarakimasen deshita) I worked / I did not work

Usage

Used to describe your daily schedule, when you wake up, when you sleep, business hours of shops/banks, and activities performed on specific days.

Important Notes

  1. 4 o’clock is ALWAYS よじ (yoji), 7 o’clock is しちじ (shichiji), and 9 o’clock is くじ (kuji).
  2. Words like 毎朝 (every morning), 毎日 (every day), 昨日 (yesterday), 今日 (today), 明日 (tomorrow) do NOT take the particle に.

Exceptions

When asking about opening and closing hours, ‘〜から〜までです’ can be used directly as a predicate without a verb (e.g., 銀行は 9時から 3時までです).

Common Mistakes

Do not say ‘あしたに べんきょうします’ (incorrect). Say ‘あした べんきょうします’ (correct). Relative time never takes に.
