Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Direct Object: Noun + を (pronounced ‘o’) + Transitive Verb (e.g. ご飯を食べます – eat rice).
  2. Action Location: Place + で + Verb (e.g. レストランで食べます – eat at a restaurant).
  3. Meeting someone: Person + に + 会います (e.g. 友達に会います – meet a friend).
  4. Invitations: Verb ます -> ませんか (Would you like to…?) / ましょう (Let’s…!).

Formation

[Object] + を + [Verb ます]

[Place] + で + [Action Verb]

[Person] + に + 会います

[Verb ます-stem] + ませんか / ましょう

Usage

Ordering food in cafeterias, buying groceries in supermarkets, inviting friends to lunch or movies.

Important Notes

会います (aimasu – to meet) takes the particle に (ni) for the person met, NOT を. (友達に会います, not 友達を会います).

Exceptions

The particle を is written with hiragana を (wo) but pronounced ‘o’.

Common Mistakes

Nepali students often confuse 場所 + で (action at a place) with 場所 + に (existence or destination). In ‘レストランで食べます’, use で because eating is an active event!
