25 min Reading + Practice Reading (Dokkai) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 05! In this narrative reading lesson, you will master reading personal travel diaries (旅行日記), blog posts, and postcard messages about trips across Japan. You will follow travelers taking the Shinkansen (新幹線), visiting ancient temples in Kyoto (京都), describing past actions (〜ました / 〜ませんでした), and expressing destinations using motion particles (へ, で, と).

Learning Objectives

  • Read chronological past-tense travel narratives and personal diaries.
  • Identify modes of transportation (新幹線で, バスで, 歩いて) and travel companions (友達と).
  • Trace chronological sequences using connectors like それから, そして, その後.
  • Answer JLPT N5 narrative reading comprehension questions accurately.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

A travel diary (日記) narrates events in chronological order: Departure (出発) -> Transportation (移動) -> Sightseeing/Activity (観光・食事) -> Return (帰宅). Sentence endings use the past polite form (-ました).

Japanese Form

[日付]、[人] と [場所] へ 行きました。[乗り物] で 行きました。[場所] で [活動] を しました。とても [形容詞-過去] です。

English Meaning

Reading travel logs, personal trip diaries, and transport descriptions.

Nepali Meaning

भ्रमण डायरी (Travel Diary), यात्रा वृत्तान्त र सवारी साधनका विवरणहरू पढ्ने र बुझ्ने सीप।

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Chronological Markers: 朝 (morning) -> 昼 (noon) -> 夕方 (evening) -> 夜 (night). Transition words: それから (and then), そして (and), 翌日 (next day).
  2. Transportation Particle で: [Vehicle] + で (e.g. 新幹線で行きました = went by Shinkansen; 歩いて = on foot [no で!]).
  3. Destination Particle へ: [Place] + へ 行く / 来る / 帰る.

Formation

• [Place] + へ + [Activity stem] + に 行きました (went to [place] in order to do [activity]).

• [Item] + を + 買いました (bought…).

• とても + [Past Adjective] (e.g. とても楽しかったです = It was very fun).

Usage

Reading blogs, travel essays, postcards from Japanese friends, and narrative passages on Section 2 of JLPT N5.

Important Notes

Note on Walking: When traveling on foot, Japanese uses 歩いて (aruite) without the vehicle particle で! Saying *歩きで is grammatically incorrect.

Exceptions

Past tense of いい (good) is よかったです (yokatta desu), NOT いくなかった / いかった!

Common Mistakes

Nepali learners often confuse 〜へ行きました (went to) with 〜から来ました (came from). Pay close attention to the direction of motion particles.
