Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Negative Request: [Verb ない-form] + でください (e.g. 写真を撮らないでください – Please do not take photos).
  2. Obligation (‘Must’): [Verb ない-form, drop い] + ければなりません (e.g. 薬を飲まなければなりません – I must take medicine).
  3. No Obligation (‘Need not’): [Verb ない-form, drop い] + くてもいいです (e.g. 明日は来なくてもいいです – You don’t have to come tomorrow).
  4. Nai-form Group Rules:
  • Group 1: change final ‘-i’ syllable to ‘-a’ + ない (書きます -> 書かない; 待ちます -> 待たない; 読みます -> 読まない; い -> わ: 買います -> 買わない!).
  • Group 2: drop ます, add ない (食べます -> 食べない; 見ます -> 見ない).
  • Group 3: します -> しない; 来ます -> こない (konai!).

Formation

[Verb ない] + でください

[Verb な] + ければなりません

[Verb な] + くてもいいです

[Time/Day] + までに + [Action]

Usage

Visiting clinics/hospitals, obeying safety signs, submitting homework before deadlines, reminding someone not to forget their passport.

Important Notes

Verbs in Group 1 ending in -い change to -わ before ない: 買います -> 買わない (kawanai), NEVER ‘kaanai’!

Exceptions

あります (arimasu) becomes simply ない (nai) in nai-form. 来ます (kimasu) becomes こない (konai).

Common Mistakes

Nepali students often confuse 〜までに (deadline: by 5 o’clock) with 〜まで (continuation: until 5 o’clock). For homework submission, use 〜までに!

Solve all 20 MCQs below to verify full mastery.

Memory Tips

Nai = Negative! Nakereba naranai = If not done, it won’t do!

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

  • Incorrect: 買いますのない形は「かあない」です。(Kaimasu no nai-kei wa ‘kaanai’ desu.)
  • Correct Form: 買いますのない形は「かわない」です。(Kaimasu no nai-kei wa ‘kawanai’ desu.)
  • Why: Verbs in Group 1 with ‘-i’ before ます always change to ‘-wa’ in the negative (買わない, 言わない, 会わない).

Mistake 2

  • Incorrect: 5時までレポートを出してください。(5-ji made repooto o dashite kudasai.)
  • Correct Form: 5時までにレポートを出してください。(5-ji made ni repooto o dashite kudasai.)
  • Why: A deadline by which an action must take place requires までに, not まで.
