25 min Reading + Practice Kanji (Characters) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 06! In this lesson, you will master 6 essential adjective Kanji representing scale, dimensions, quantity, and height: 大 (big/large), 小 (small/little), 長 (long/leader), 高 (high/expensive), 多 (many/much), and 少 (few/little). These characters are fundamental building blocks of Japanese descriptive language and form antonym pairs (大 vs 小; 高 vs 低; 多 vs 少) that appear across everyday conversations and JLPT reading texts.

Learning Objectives

  • Master stroke orders and On/Kun readings of 6 dimensional adjective Kanji.
  • Recognize antonym pairs: 大きい (ookii) vs 小さい (chiisai), 多い (ooi) vs 少ない (sukunai).
  • Understand dual meanings such as 高 (high physical height VS expensive price) and 長 (long distance/time VS head/chief: 社長, 校長).
  • Accurately parse comparative and descriptive sentences in JLPT N5.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

These characters visually reflect scale: 大 is a person spreading arms wide; 小 is small dividing bits; 長 is long streaming hair of an elder; 高 is a tall multi-story tower with roof and windows; 多 is two evening crescents stacked (multiplicity); 少 is small bits with a downward slash (even smaller).

Japanese Form

大 (ダイ/タイ/おお-きい), 小 (ショウ/ちい-さい/こ/お), 長 (チョウ/なが-い), 高 (コウ/たか-い), 多 (タ/おお-い), 少 (ショウ/すく-ない/すこ-し)

English Meaning

Dimensions and Size (Big, Small, Long/Leader, High/Expensive, Many, Few/Little)

Nepali Meaning

आकार, उचाइ र परिमाण सम्बन्धी कान्जीहरू (ठूलो, सानो, लामो/प्रमुख, अग्लो/महङ्गो, धेरै, थोरै)

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Okurigana Rule: When used as i-adjectives, the trailing kana must be written in Hiragana: 大きい (おおきい), 小さい (ちいさい), 長い (ながい), 高い (たかい), 多い (おおい), 少ない (すくない).
  2. Jukugo Compounds: In compound nouns, On-yomi is used: 大学 (だいがく = university), 小学校 (しょうがっこう = elementary school), 高校 (こうこう = high school), 多少 (たしょう = more or less).
  3. Adverbial forms: 少し (すこし = a little bit) vs 少ない (すくない = few in quantity).

Formation

• 大: 3 strokes (horizontal bar, sweeping vertical leg, right leg sweep)

• 小: 3 strokes (hooked central vertical barb 亅, left dot, right dot)

• 長: 8 strokes (top horizontal, vertical stroke, three internal rungs, vertical stem, bottom sweeps)

• 高: 10 strokes (top dot lid, box 口, wide frame/lid 冂, bottom box 口)

• 多: 6 strokes (two stacked evening 夕 radicals, 3 strokes each)

• 少: 4 strokes (small 小 with an additional sweeping diagonal stroke)

Usage

Used in shopping (このシャツは大きいです = This shirt is large; 高すぎます = too expensive), school levels (小学校, 中学校, 高校, 大学), and quantity queries (人が多いです = there are many people).

Important Notes

Do not confuse 少 (few: 4 strokes) with 小 (small: 3 strokes). Notice that 少 has an extra sweeping tail slash on the left. Also remember: 大学生 (university student) vs 高校生 (high school student).

Exceptions

Special compound readings:

  • 大切 (たいせつ – important – uses ‘tai’)
  • 大変 (たいへん – tough/difficult – uses ‘tai’)
  • 大人 (おとな – adult – irregular jukujikun reading)
  • 小麦 (こむぎ – wheat)

Common Mistakes

Learners often say ‘多い人’ directly before a noun, but in Japanese, 多 operates as a predicate (人が多い) or uses 多くの人. Also remember that 高い means both ‘tall’ (背が高い) and ‘expensive’ (値段が高い).

  • Japanese: この靴は少し小さいです。
  • Reading: この くつは すこし ちいさいです。
