Introduction
In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 22, we master the foundational grammar structures: 連体修飾 (Noun modification by sentences / Relative clauses) / 修飾節内の主語 (Subject marked by ‘が’) / どんな N (どのようなN). For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the core function of 連体修飾 (Noun modification by sentences / Relative clauses) / 修飾節内の主語 (Subject marked by ‘が’) / どんな N (どのようなN).
- Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
- Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
- Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
- Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Concept / Meaning
Relative clauses in Japanese: unlike English which uses relative pronouns (‘who’, ‘which’, ‘that’) placed after the noun, Japanese relative clauses are placed directly before the modified noun, with the modifying verb in the Plain Form (普通形). The subject within the relative clause is strictly marked by が.
Japanese Form
【連体修飾節】[Sentence (普通形)] + Noun
・動詞現在: 本を 読む 人 (Person who reads books)
・動詞過去: きのう 買った 本 (Book I bought yesterday)
・動詞否定: 朝ご飯を 食べない 人 (Person who doesn’t eat breakfast)
【節内の主語】[Subject が Verb] + Noun (例: 母が 作った 料理)
【時間の表現】[V(辞書形)] 時間・約束・用事 (例: 本を 読む 時間が ありません)
English Meaning
The [Noun] that/which/who [Sentence] / The food that mother cooked / Time/Appointment/Errand to [Verb]
Nepali Meaning
[वाक्य] गरेको/हुने नामपद / आमाले पकाउनुभएको खाना / [काम] गर्ने समय / भेट्ने काम
Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- In Japanese, the modifier ALWAYS precedes the noun being modified:
- Word level: 赤い 傘 (Red umbrella).
- Sentence level: [きのう 買った] 傘 (The umbrella [that I bought yesterday]).
- The verb in the modifying relative clause MUST be in Plain Form (普通形) (辞書形, た形, ない形, なかった形). Never use です or ます inside the clause!
- Subject inside the Clause: The subject inside a relative clause takes particle が (never は):
- [母が 作った] 料理 (The food that mother made).
- [わたしが 住んでいる] アパート (The apartment where I live).
- Abstract Nouns with Clauses: Clauses can modify nouns like 時間 (time), 約束 (promise/appointment), and 用事 (errand):
- 朝ご飯を 食べる 時間が ありません (I have no time to eat breakfast).
- 友達と 会う 約束が あります (I have an appointment to meet a friend).
Formation
| Tense of Clause | Modifying Clause (Plain) | Head Noun | English Meaning | Nepali Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Present Pos | あそこに いる | 人 | The person who is over there | उ त्यहाँ भएको मान्छे |
| Past Pos | ミラーさんが 住んでいた | 家 | The house where Miller lived | मिलरजी बस्नुभएको घर |
| Present Neg | 漢字が 書けない | 学生 | A student who cannot write Kanji | कान्जी लेख्न नसक्ने विद्यार्थी |
| Past Neg | きのう 来なかった | 人 | The person who didn’t come yesterday | हिजो नआएको मान्छे |
Usage
Essential for real estate inquiries (apartment hunting: ‘どんな 部屋を お探しですか’), identifying lost items, describing people in photos, and explaining schedules/appointments.
Important Notes
- ⚠️ There are NO relative pronouns in Japanese (no ‘who’, ‘which’, ‘that’, ‘where’). The modifying sentence attaches directly to the noun!
- If the modifying clause ends in a な-adjective, attach な (親切な 人); if it ends in a noun, attach の (さくら大学の 学生).
Exceptions
When the subject inside the relative clause is identical to the main sentence topic, it is omitted: [あした 買う] 本 (The book [I will buy tomorrow]).
Common Mistakes
Never use ‘ます’ inside a modifying clause (e.g. きのう 買いました本 is wrong!). It must be きのう 買った本. Never use ‘は’ for the subject inside the clause (母は 作った料理 is incorrect; use 母が 作った料理).
