Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 19, we master the foundational grammar structures: た形 (Ta-form conjugation rules) / Vた ことが あります (経験) / V1たり、V2たり します (動作の並列) / い形容詞 (~く なります) / な形容詞・名詞 (~に なります) (変化). For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of た形 (Ta-form conjugation rules) / Vた ことが あります (経験) / V1たり、V2たり します (動作の並列) / い形容詞 (~く なります) / な形容詞・名詞 (~に なります) (変化).
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

The plain past form (た形 – Ta-form) which conjugates exactly like the te-form (replacing te/de with ta/da). Expressing past lifetime experiences with 〜たことがあります. Listing representative, non-exhaustive actions with 〜たり〜たりします. Expressing natural changes of state with 〜くなります and 〜になります.

English Meaning

Ta-form rules / Have the experience of verbing / Do things like V1 and V2 / Become [Adjective/Noun]

Nepali Meaning

ता-फर्म बनाउने नियम / [काम] गरेको अनुभव छ / [काम१] गर्ने, [काम२] गर्ने आदि गर्छु / [विशेषण वा नामपद] बन्दै जानु / हुनु

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Ta-Form Rules (た形): Exactly identical to the te-form (Lesson 14)! Just replace ‘て’ with ‘た’ and ‘で’ with ‘だ’:
  • 食べて → 食べた; 飲んで → 飲んだ; 行って → 行った; 来て → 来た (kita).
  1. Vた ことがあります (Experience): Expresses having done something at least once in your lifetime. Direct negation is Vた ことが ありません (have never done).
  • 富士山に 登った ことが あります (I have climbed Mount Fuji).
  • 刺身を 食べた ことが ありません (I have never eaten sashimi).
  1. V1たり、V2たり します (Representative Actions): Lists two or three representative actions chosen from a larger set of activities (नेपालीमा: ‘यसो गर्ने, उसो गर्ने गर्छु’). The tense of the sentence is determined by the final します/しました.
  • 日曜日は 掃除したり、洗濯したり します (On Sundays I do things like cleaning and laundry).
  1. Change of State (〜なります – to become):
  • い-adjectives: Drop い, add く なります (寒く なります – becomes cold).
  • な-adjectives: Add に なります (元気に なります – becomes healthy/energetic).
  • Nouns: Add に なります (20歳に なります – turns 20 years old, 先生に なります – becomes a teacher).

Formation

Category Present Base Te-form (て) Ta-form (た) Experience (たことがあります)
Group 1 行きます 行って 行った 行った ことが あります
Group 1 飲みます 飲んで 飲んだ 飲んだ ことが あります
Group 2 食べます 食べて 食べた 食べた ことが あります
Group 3 します / 来ます して / 来て した / 来た (きた) した / 来た ことが あります

Usage

Used for discussing memorable travel memories, hobbies, recounting what you did over the weekend, describing bodily healing, weather changes, and career aspirations.

Important Notes

  1. Do not use ‘〜たことがあります’ for routine daily actions of yesterday (e.g. do not say きのう ご飯を食べたことがあります!). Use it strictly for lifetime experiences.
  2. In ‘〜たり〜たりします’, always put ‘します/しました’ at the end; do not stop at ‘〜たり’.

Exceptions

The adjective いい becomes よく なります (becomes good/improves).

Common Mistakes

Nepalese students often forget the final ‘します’ in tari-tari sentences (saying 本を読んだりテレビを見たり alone). You MUST close with ‘します’ or ‘しました’.

Translation

  • English:

Matsumoto: Mr. Miller, how about another glass of beer?

Miller: No, thank you. Actually, I have been on a diet since yesterday.

Matsumoto: Is that so? I have also dieted many times before!

Miller: What kind of diet was it?

Matsumoto: I did things like eating only apples every day and running a lot. But unreasonable dieting is not good for your health.

Miller: That’s true. Well then, I will have another glass of beer! My diet starts tomorrow!

  • Nepali:

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

  • Incorrect: 日曜日は 映画を 見たり、買い物を 行きました。(Incomplete ending)
  • Correct Form: 日曜日は 映画を 見たり、買い物に 行ったり しました。(Mitari, ittari shimashita.)
  • Why: Both paired verbs must take ‘たり’ and the sentence must strictly conclude with ‘しました/します’.

Mistake 2

  • Incorrect: きれいく なりました。(Adjective class error)
  • Correct Form: きれいに なりました。(Kirei ni narimashita.)
  • Why: ‘きれい’ is a な-adjective, so it becomes ‘きれいに なります’.
