Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 11, we master the foundational grammar structures: 助数詞 (Counters: ひとつ〜とお, 人, 枚, 台, 本, 匹, etc.) / 数量詞の語順 / 期間 に ~回 (頻度) / どのくらい・どれくらい (期間) / ~だけ (限定). For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of 助数詞 (Counters: ひとつ〜とお, 人, 枚, 台, 本, 匹, etc.) / 数量詞の語順 / 期間 に ~回 (頻度) / どのくらい・どれくらい (期間) / ~だけ (限定).
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Japanese uses dedicated numerical classifier suffixes (counters – 助数詞) depending on the shape, nature, and category of objects. Quantifiers typically follow the particle rather than preceding it. Expressing duration, frequency within a time span (に 〜回), and limitation (だけ – only).

English Meaning

General counters 1-10 / People, sheets, machines, bottles, books / Quantifier word order / [Times] per [Period] / How long does it take? / Only N

Nepali Meaning

सामान्य गणना १ देखि १० वटा / मान्छे (जना), पातलो वस्तु (थान), मेसिन/सवारी (वटा), लामो वस्तु (ओटा), पुस्तक (प्रति) / काउन्टरको क्रम / [अवधि] मा [पटक] / कति समय लाग्छ? / N मात्र

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Universal Native Counters (ひとつ〜とお): 1つ (hitotsu), 2つ (futatsu), 3つ (mittsu), 4つ (yottsu), 5つ (itsutsu), 6つ (muttsu), 7つ (nanatsu), 8つ (yattsu), 9つ (kokonotsu), 10 (tō). Beyond 10, regular numbers are used without ‘tsu’. Question word is いくつ (ikutsu).
  2. Dedicated Counters:
  • 人 (nin): 1人 (hitori), 2人 (futari – both irregular!), 3人 (sannin), 4人 (yonin).
  • 枚 (mai): Thin, flat items (paper, shirts, plates, stamps, tickets).
  • 台 (dai): Machines, vehicles, appliances (cars, bicycles, computers, TVs).
  • 本 (hon/bon/pon): Long, cylindrical objects (pens, bottles, trees, umbrellas, bananas).
  • 杯 (hai/bai/pai): Cups and glasses of drinks (coffee, beer).
  1. Word Order: The quantifier directly precedes the verb: りんごを 4つ 買いました (Apples 4-pieces bought).
  2. Frequency: [Time period] に [Number] 回: 1か月に 2回 (Twice a month).
  3. だけ: Means ‘only’ or ‘just’. Replaces が or を, or attaches to counters: 休みは 日曜日だけです.

Formation

Category Counter 1 2 3 4 Question
General つ ひとつ ふたつ みっつ よっつ いくつ
People 人 ひとり ふたり さんにん よにん なんにん
Flat items 枚 いちまい にまい さんまい よんまい なんまい
Machines 台 いちだい にだい さんだい よんだい なんだい
Long items 本 いっぽん にほん さんぼん よんほん なんぼん

Usage

Essential for ordering food, buying stamps/postcards at post offices, purchasing tickets, specifying party sizes at restaurants, and discussing work/study hours and vacation frequency.

Important Notes

  1. Note sound changes with 本 (hon): 1本 (ippon), 3本 (sanbon – voiced!), 6本 (roppon), 8本 (happon), 10本 (jippon), 何本 (nanbon).
  2. 4 people is ALWAYS よにん (yonin); 4 machines is よんだい (yondai).
  3. ‘どのくらい’ (how long) asks for time duration or money: 大阪まで どのくらい かかりますか.

Exceptions

When asking for a quantity, no particle is placed between the quantifier and the verb: 切手を 5枚 買いました (Not ‘5枚を’!).

Common Mistakes

Nepalese learners often say ‘3つのりんごを 買いました’ (awkward English style). The natural Japanese order is ‘りんごを 3つ 買いました’.
