Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Hours: [Number] + 時 (じ). Note irregulars: 4:00 = よじ (yoji), 7:00 = しちじ (shichiji), 9:00 = くじ (kuji).
  2. Minutes: [Number] + 分 (ふん/ぷん). 1 min = いっぷん, 3 min = さんぷん, 5 min = ごふん, 10 min = じゅっぷん/じっぷん.
  3. Days of the week end in 曜日 (ようび). Sunday is 日曜日, Monday is 月曜日, etc.
  4. Time particle: Specific clock times take the particle に (ni). Adverbs like 今日, 毎日 do NOT take に.

Formation

[Time] + に + [Verb ます]

午前 / 午後 + [Time] + です

Usage

Scheduling shifts in baito (part-time jobs), setting alarms, class timetables, bank and post office business hours.

Important Notes

4 o’clock is よじ (yoji), NEVER ‘yonji’ or ‘shiji’. 9 o’clock is くじ (kuji), NEVER ‘kyuuji’.

Exceptions

The kanji for Wednesday (水曜日 – Suiyoubi) uses water (水), Friday (金曜日 – Kinyoubi) uses gold/money (金).

Common Mistakes

Do not attach に to relative time words: say ‘きのう勉強しました’, NEVER ‘きのうに勉強しました’.
