25 min Reading + Practice Reading (Dokkai) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 23! In this spatial navigation reading lesson, you will master reading walking route directions, neighborhood maps, and intersection guidance (道案内). You will learn how to parse instructions like ‘turn right at the traffic light’ (信号を右に曲がって), ‘cross the bridge’ (橋を渡って), ‘go straight’ (まっすぐ行って), and locate landmarks like convenience stores, banks, post offices, and police boxes (交番).

Learning Objectives

  • Read and comprehend Japanese step-by-step street walking directions.
  • Understand directional movement verbs: 曲がる (turn), 渡る (cross), まっすぐ行く (go straight).
  • Interpret positional relationship words: 右側 (right side), 左側 (left side), 角 (corner), 隣 (next to).
  • Follow written route descriptions from a train station to a designated destination.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Wayfinding directions connect actions sequentially using the te-form: [Landmark] を [Direction] へ 曲がって、 [Street/Bridge] を 渡ると、 [Side] に あります. The particle を marks the point of turning or transit (道を渡る, 角を曲がる).

Japanese Form

[ランドマーク] を [右/左] に 曲がって、[道路] を まっすぐ 行きます。 [目印] の [隣/向かい] に あります。

English Meaning

Reading pedestrian route directions, street intersection guidance, and spatial landmark descriptions.

Nepali Meaning

बाटो सोध्ने र देखाउने तरिका (Directions), चोक (Intersection), पुल तर्ने र गन्तव्य पत्ता लगाउने सीप।

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Turning at a spot: [Corner/Intersection] を 右 / 左 に 曲がる (Turn right/left at…).
  2. Crossing transit: [Bridge/Street/Crosswalk] を 渡る (Cross bridge/street).
  3. Going straight: まっすぐ 行く / 歩く (Go straight).
  4. Position markers:
  • 〇つ目の角 (〇-th corner)
  • 右側 / 左側 (Right / Left side)
  • 向かい側 (むかいがわ = opposite side / across the street)
  • 手前 (てまえ = just before) / 奥 (おく = deep inside/past).

Formation

• 一つ目の信号を右に曲がってください (Please turn right at the first traffic light).

• 橋を渡ると、左側に郵便局があります (When you cross the bridge, there is a post office on the left).

• コンビニの隣に銀行があります (There is a bank next to the convenience store).

Usage

Following walking maps on Japanese shop websites, reading tourist town maps, listening to directions from police box officers (交番), and navigating Japanese residential blocks.

Important Notes

Pay close attention to を with motion verbs: 信号を右に曲がる and 橋を渡る use を, not に or で, because they mark the spatial scene through which motion occurs.

Exceptions

When giving directions, Japanese speakers often end clauses with 〜と (conditional ‘when you do…’): まっすぐ行くと、右にあります (If you go straight, it’s on your right).

Common Mistakes

Do not confuse 二つ目の角 (the SECOND corner) with 二つの角 (two corners). The 目 suffix indicates ordinal ranking (first, second, third).
