25 min Reading + Practice Kanji (Characters) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 15! In this lesson, you will master 4 essential Kanji representing transportation vehicles, roads, and movement: 車 (car/vehicle/wheel), 道 (road/way/street), 自 (oneself/automatic), and 転 (to roll/turn over/revolve). Together, these characters form Japan’s most popular daily commute mode: 自転車 (bicycle; literally ‘self-revolving vehicle’), as well as 自動車 (automobile), and navigation on the street (道路, 道を聞く).

Learning Objectives

  • Master stroke orders, radicals, and readings of 4 key vehicle and movement Kanji.
  • Combine 自 and 転 to master vehicle compounds: 自転車 (jitensha), 自動車 (jidousha).
  • Understand 道 as both physical streets (道路, 帰り道) and traditional Japanese martial/cultural ‘ways’ (茶道, 柔道).
  • Accurately parse transportation questions and street directions in JLPT N5.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

These characters depict mechanical and physical journeys: 車 shows an overhead blueprint of a two-wheeled wooden cart with a central axle; 道 depicts a head/person 首 walking along a roadway 辶; 自 depicts a human nose (the ancient Chinese and Japanese point to their nose to indicate ‘oneself’); 転 depicts a cart 車 rolling and rotating sideways 云.

Japanese Form

車 (シャ/くるま), 道 (ドウ/トウ/みち), 自 (ジ/シ/みずか-ら), 転 (テン/ころ-がる/ころ-ぶ)

English Meaning

Transportation and Paths (Car/Vehicle, Road/Way, Oneself/Auto, To Roll/Turn)

Nepali Meaning

सवारी साधन र बाटो सम्बन्धी कान्जीहरू (गाडी/कार, बाटो/मार्ग, आफू/स्वतः, गुड्नु/पल्टिनु)

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Vehicle Naming compounds: 自転車 (じてんしゃ = bicycle; self + roll + vehicle), 自動車 (じどうしゃ = automobile; self + move + vehicle), 電車 (でんしゃ = electric train).
  2. Road and Navigation: 道 (みち = street/path). Phrases: 道を歩く (walk along a path), 道を聞く (ask for directions), 道に迷う (get lost).
  3. Oneself Prefix 自 (じ): 自分 (じぶん = oneself), 自由 (じゆう = freedom), 自販機 (じはんき = vending machine).

Formation

• 車: 7 strokes (top horizontal, box 口, central horizontal line, bottom horizontal, vertical axle cutting straight through)

• 道: 12 strokes (neck/head 首 [9 strokes: two top ticks, horizontal, eye 目] on right, road radical 辶 [3 strokes] enclosing from left and bottom)

• 自: 6 strokes (top tick, box frame enclosing two inner horizontal bars – eye 目 with a top tick)

• 転: 11 strokes (car radical 車 [7 strokes] on left, cloud/roll 云 [4 strokes] on right)

Usage

Daily commuting (自転車で駅へ行きます), asking directions on streets (すみません、道を教えてください), and safety announcements (車に気をつけてください).

Important Notes

Readings of 車:

  • くるま (Kun-yomi): 車 (car), 白い車 (white car)
  • しゃ (On-yomi): 電車 (train), 自転車 (bicycle), 自動車 (automobile), 駐車場 (ちゅうしゃじょう – parking lot)

Readings of 道:

  • みち (Kun-yomi): 道 (road/street), 近道 (ちかみち – shortcut)
  • どう (On-yomi): 水道 (すいどう – water supply), 北海道 (ほっかいどう), 書道 (しょどう – calligraphy)

Exceptions

Special compound readings:

  • 柔道 (じゅうどう – judo)
  • 剣道 (けんどう – kendo)
  • 茶道 (さどう / ちゃどう – tea ceremony)
  • 転ぶ (ころぶ – to fall down / tumble)

Common Mistakes

Do not confuse 車 (car: vertical line goes straight through from top to bottom) with 東 (east: sun behind tree with sweeping legs). In 自 (oneself), make sure to include the top tick; without it, it is 目 (eye).

Conversation Practice

Situation

Buying a commuter bicycle at a bicycle shop in Tokyo.

Dialogue

Translation

  • English:

Raj: Excuse me, I am looking for a bicycle for commuting to school.

Shopkeeper: How about this silver bicycle? It’s lightweight and easy to ride.

पसले: यो चाँदी रङको साइकल कस्तो होला? हलुका र चलाउन सजिलो छ।

प्रबिन: राम्रो रहेछ। कलेज जाने बाटोमा उकालो धेरै भएकोले हलुका फ्रेम नै राम्रो हुन्छ।

पसले: आफ्नै नाममा चोरी रोकथाम दर्ता पनि तुरुन्तै गर्न सकिन्छ।

Meaning

Japanese Meaning

乗り物、車道、自立、回転を表す交通・移動の漢字。

English Meaning

Transportation Kanji representing vehicles, roadways, oneself/automatic, and rolling rotation.

Nepali Meaning

सवारी साधन, सडक, आफू/स्वतः र गुड्ने चक्र सम्बन्धी कान्जीहरू।

Important Vocabulary

車 (car), 道 (road), 自転車 (bicycle), 自動車 (automobile), 自分 (oneself), 水道 (tap water), 運転 (driving)

How to Learn

Step 1: Understand

Break down 自転車: 自 (oneself) + 転 (rotate/roll) + 車 (vehicle) = BICYCLE!

Step 2: Memorize

Break down 自動車: 自 (oneself) + 動 (move) + 車 (vehicle) = AUTOMOBILE!

Step 3: Practice

Picture 車 as an ancient two-wheeled cart seen from above.

Step 4: Speak

Picture 自 as a nose pointing to ‘oneself’ (eye with top tick).

Step 5: Read

Remember 道 has the road movement radical 辶 enclosing a traveler’s head 首.

Step 6: Review

Practice writing stroke order for 道 (12 strokes) and 転 (11 strokes).

Memory Tips

A self-rolling vehicle (自 + 転 + 車) is a BICYCLE (自転車)!

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

  • Incorrect: Confusing 自 (oneself: 6 strokes) with 目 (eye: 5 strokes) or 白 (white: 5 strokes).
  • Correct Form: 自 has a top tick over an eye 目 (6 strokes total).
  • Why: Without the top tick, it is eye (目); with an open base, it is white (白).

Mistake 2

  • Incorrect: Writing the road radical 辶 before the inside character 首 in 道.
  • Correct Form: Always write the inside part (首) first, and the enclosing 辶 last.
  • Why: The road movement radical 辶 is always drawn last in stroke order rules.
