Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Counters place after the particle: Noun を [Number + Counter] Verb (e.g. りんごを3つ買いました – I bought 3 apples).
  2. Duration: Takes NO particle before verbs (e.g. 3時間勉強しました – studied for 3 hours).
  3. Frequency per period: [Period] に [Times] 回 (e.g. 1日に3回薬を飲みます – take medicine 3 times a day).
  4. People counter: 1 person = ひとり (一人), 2 people = ふたり (二人), 3+ = [Num] + にん (三人、四人: よにん).

Formation

[Noun] + を + [Number + Counter] + [Verb ます]

[Period] + に + [Frequency] + [Verb ます]

[Counter] + だけ = Only [Amount]

Usage

Ordering food in restaurants, shopping at supermarkets, shipping letters/parcels at the post office, inquiring about flight/travel durations.

Important Notes

4 people is よにん (yonin), NEVER ‘shinin’ (which sounds like 死人 – dead person) or ‘yonnin’. 4 machines is よんだい (yondai).

Exceptions

1 long item = いっぽん (ippon), 3 = さんぼん (sanbon), 6 = ろっぽん (roppon), 8 = はっぽん (happon), 10 = じゅっぽん (juppon).

Common Mistakes

Nepali learners often put the counter before the particle (‘3tsu o ringo o kaimashita’ ❌). In natural Japanese, say: ‘Ringo o mittsu kaimashita’ ✔️.

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

  • Incorrect: 4人の発音は「しにん」です。(4-nin no hatsuon wa ‘shinin’ desu.)
  • Correct Form: 4人の発音は「よにん」です。(4-nin no hatsuon wa ‘yonin’ desu.)
  • Why: 4 people is strictly よにん (yonin) to avoid the homophone 死人 (dead person).

Mistake 2

  • Incorrect: 3時間に行動を勉強しました。(3-jikan ni benkyou shimashita.)
  • Correct Form: 3時間勉強しました。(3-jikan benkyou shimashita.)
  • Why: Time durations (e.g. 3時間 – for 3 hours) function as adverbs and do NOT take に.
