Introduction
In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 3, we master the foundational grammar structures: ここ・そこ・あそこ / こちら・そちら・あちら / N は Place です / どこ・どちら / いくら / N を ください / N の N (国・産地). For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the core function of ここ・そこ・あそこ / こちら・そちら・あちら / N は Place です / どこ・どちら / いくら / N を ください / N の N (国・産地).
- Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
- Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
- Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
- Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- ここ (here) = Place where speaker is.
- そこ (there) = Place where listener is.
- あそこ (over there) = Place away from both.
- どこ (where) = Question word for location.
- こちら/そちら/あちら/どちら are polite equivalents of koko/soko/asoko/doko, and also indicate physical directions (this way/that way).
- ‘N1 は どこ/どちら ですか’ asks where an entity, person, or facility is located.
- ‘N を ください’ is the standard phrase to purchase or order an item.
- ‘いくら’ asks the price of something.
Formation
| Category | Speaker Area | Listener Area | Far Area | Question |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Place | ここ (koko – यहाँ) | そこ (soko – त्यहाँ) | あそこ (asoko – उ त्यहाँ) | どこ (doko – कहाँ) |
| Direction / Polite Place | こちら (kochira – यता) | そちら (sochira – त्यता) | あちら (achira – उ त्यता) | どちら (dochira – कता/कहाँ) |
Usage
Essential for navigating buildings, shopping at department stores/convenience stores, asking where someone is (e.g. ‘Yamada-san wa doko desu ka’), and asking about country of origin of products.
Important Notes
- When asking about someone’s country, school, or company, use ‘どちら’ politely: ‘お国は どちらですか’ (Where are you from?).
- Floors in Japanese use the counter ‘階’ (かい/がい): 1階 (いっかい), 2階 (にかい), 3階 (さんがい – voiced!), 4階 (よんかい).
Exceptions
3rd floor is pronounced ‘さんがい’ (sangai), not ‘sankai’. Basement floors are marked with ‘地下’ (chika): 地下1階 (B1).
Common Mistakes
Do not confuse ‘ここ’ (place: here) with ‘これ’ (object: this). Never say ‘ここは ペンです’ when pointing to a pen in your hand.
