Introduction
In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 9, we master the foundational grammar structures: N が あります・わかります / N が 好きです・嫌いです / N が 上手です・下手です / どんな N / S1 から、S2 (理由) / どうして. For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.
Learning Objectives
- Understand the core function of N が あります・わかります / N が 好きです・嫌いです / N が 上手です・下手です / どんな N / S1 から、S2 (理由) / どうして.
- Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
- Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
- Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
- Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- In Japanese, verbs of ability/possession (わかります, あります) and adjectives of preference/competence (好き, 嫌い, 上手, 下手) mark their object with が (not を):
- 日本語が わかります (I understand Japanese).
- 車が あります (I have a car).
- スポーツが 好きです (I like sports).
- 歌が 上手です (Good at singing).
- ‘どんな N が 好きですか’ asks for a specific genre or item within a category.
- Adverbs of degree:
- Affirmative: よく (well), だいたい (mostly), たくさん (a lot), すこし (a little).
- Negative: あまり〜ない (not much), ぜんぜん〜ない (not at all).
- から attached to the end of sentence 1 gives the reason for sentence 2: 時間が ありませんから、テレビを 見ません (Because I have no time, I don’t watch TV).
- どうして asks ‘why’. Respond with ‘[Reason] からです’.
Formation
| Category | Target (が) | Predicate | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Preference | 音楽 が | 好きです (suki desu) | I like music |
| Competence | 料理 が | 上手です (jouzu desu) | Good at cooking |
| Incompetence | ダンス が | 下手です (heta desu) | Poor at dancing |
| Comprehension | 英語 が | わかります (wakarimasu) | Understand English |
| Possession | 時間 が | あります (arimasu) | Have time |
Usage
Used for introducing hobbies and preferences, discussing skills during job interviews, politely declining invitations with reasons, and asking why someone is doing something.
Important Notes
- Do NOT use 上手 (jōzu) to praise your own family or yourself! Say ‘下手です’ or ‘あまりできません’ modestly.
- When declining an invitation with regret, use 残念ですが (Zannen desu ga – It is regrettable, but…).
Exceptions
When a topic is emphasized or contrasted, が can be replaced by は: ひらがなは わかりますが、漢字は わかりません (I understand Hiragana, but I don’t understand Kanji).
Common Mistakes
Never say ‘日本語を わかります’ (incorrect); it MUST be ‘日本語が わかります’. Never say ‘わたしは 日本語が 上手です’ (immodest/arrogant in Japanese culture).
