Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Situational Concept: To share life milestones or cultural experiences (e.g. climbing Mt. Fuji, wearing kimono, riding the Shinkansen), use 「〜たことがあります」. To list casual alternating activities, use 「〜たり、〜たりします」.

Japanese Form

A: きれいな 浴衣ですね。着物を 着た ことが ありますか。

B: いいえ、一度も ありません。初めてです。

A: 週末は いつも 何を しますか。

B: 部屋を 掃除したり、洗濯したり します。

A: ケーキを もう一つ いかがですか。

B: いただきます! ダイエットは あしたから します!

English Meaning

A: What a pretty yukata! Have you ever worn a kimono before?

B: No, not even once. This is my first time.

A: What do you usually do on weekends?

B: I do things like cleaning my room and doing laundry.

A: How about another piece of cake?

B: I’ll take it! My diet starts tomorrow!

Nepali Meaning

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Ask experience: [Verb た-form] ことが ありますか.
  2. Affirmative experience: はい、[一度 / 何度も] あります.
  3. Negative experience: いいえ、一度も ありません.
  4. Non-exhaustive list: [Verb 1 た] り、[Verb 2 た] り します.
  5. Change of state: [I-adj drop い] + くなります / [Na-adj / Noun] + に なります.

Formation

Structure Japanese Example Romaji Meaning (Nepali)
Experience 富士山に 登ったことがあります Fujisan ni nobotta koto ga arimasu फुजी हिमाल चढेको अनुभव छ
Never done 食べたことがありません Tabeta koto ga arimasen खाएको अनुभव छैन
Listing 歌ったり 踊ったりします Utattari odottari shimasu गाउने नाच्ने गर्छु
Becoming 寒くなります Samuku narimasu चिसो हुँदै जान्छ
Becoming 医者に なります Isha ni narimasu डाक्टर बन्छु

Usage

Essential for job interviews, friendly ice-breakers, travel discussions, and talking about personal growth.

Important Notes

  • Do NOT use ‘〜たことがあります’ for routine daily actions done yesterday (e.g. do not say ‘Kinou pan o tabeta koto ga arimasu’). It is strictly for historical lifetime experience!
  • ‘Ichido mo’ (一度も) must pair with negative verb: 一度もありません (Not even once).
  • ‘Yukata’ is a casual light cotton kimono worn during summer festivals and hot spring ryokans.

Exceptions

When asked ‘Nankai arimasu ka’ (How many times?), answer with frequency counter: 2回あります (Twice).

Common Mistakes

Using ‘〜たり、〜たり’ with non-past verbs (e.g. 掃除するり). It MUST use Verb Ta-form + ri: 掃除したり.

  • Japanese: すしを食べたことがありますか。はい、何度もあります。
