Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 20, we master the foundational grammar structures: 普通体 (Plain style) vs 丁寧体 (Polite style) / 動詞・形容詞・名詞の普通形一覧 / 会話における普通体の特徴 (疑問詞なし、イントネーション、助詞省略). For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of 普通体 (Plain style) vs 丁寧体 (Polite style) / 動詞・形容詞・名詞の普通形一覧 / 会話における普通体の特徴 (疑問詞なし、イントネーション、助詞省略).
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

The complete transition into Japanese Plain Style (普通体 – Futsuutai). Used with close friends, family members, peers, and in informal everyday conversations. Rules for conversational adaptation: dropping question particle か, rising intonation, dropping topic/object particles, and informal conversational fillers.

Japanese Form

(Rising ↗)
  2. 助詞省略: ご飯[を] 食べる?、明日 暇[だ]?
  3. 応答: うん (はい)、ううん (いいえ)

English Meaning

Plain style verbs, adjectives, nouns / Casual conversation rules / Rising intonation for questions / Un (Yes), Uun (No)

Nepali Meaning

क्रिया, विशेषण र नामपदको अनौपचारिक रूप (Plain style) / साथीभाइसँग बोल्ने अनौपचारिक कुराकानी / प्रश्नमा ‘का’ नराखी स्वर बढाउने / उँ (हजुर), उउँ (अहँ)

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Polite Style (丁寧体 – Teineitai) uses です and ます. Used with teachers, strangers, superiors, and in formal business.
  2. Plain Style (普通体 – Futsuutai) drops です and ます. Used with intimate friends, family, younger people, and in written diaries, essays, and newspapers.
  3. Conversational Features of Plain Style:
  • No ‘か’ in questions: The question particle ‘か’ sounds harsh in casual speech. Instead, speak with a rising intonation: どこへ 行く? ↗ (Where are you going?).
  • ‘だ’ is dropped in questions: For nouns and na-adjectives, do NOT say 暇だ?. Say ‘明日 暇? ↗’ (Free tomorrow?).
  • Omission of particles: Particles は, を, が, へ are often dropped when the context is obvious: ご飯[を] 食べる? / これ[は] おいしいね.
  • Informal yes/no: Yes = うん (un); No = ううん (ūun).
  • 〜ている drops ‘い’: In spoken speech, 食べている becomes 食べてる; 待っている becomes 待ってる.

Formation

Word Type Present Pos (現在肯定) Present Neg (現在否定) Past Pos (過去肯定) Past Neg (過去否定)

Usage

Essential for everyday social life in Japan: talking to classmates, close coworkers after work, host family members, casual messaging on LINE, and understanding anime, dramas, and manga.

Important Notes

  1. ⚠️ DANGER OF OVER-FAMILIARITY: Never use plain style with teachers, bosses, interviewers, or elderly strangers! It will sound disrespectful and rude.
  2. In plain questions, never add ‘だか’ (e.g. 暇だか? is totally ungrammatical). Just say ‘暇? ↗’.

Exceptions

When responding to a plain question affirmatively, women and men often drop ‘だ’ for na-adjectives and nouns: ‘うん、暇 (Un, hima)’.

Common Mistakes

Nepalese students sometimes slip into plain form when talking to teachers (saying ‘先生、行く?’). Always maintain polite ‘ます/です’ with instructors!
