25 min Reading + Practice Kanji (Characters) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 17! In this lesson, you will master 4 essential Kanji of cognition, identity, and spatial-temporal relationships: 思 (to think/feel), 知 (to know/notice), 名 (name/fame), and 間 (interval/space/between/time). These characters appear constantly when stating personal opinions (~と思います), talking about acquaintances (知り合い), exchanging names (名前), and measuring periods of time (一時間, 一週間).

Learning Objectives

  • Master stroke orders, radicals, and readings of 4 cognition and relation Kanji.
  • Form the fundamental N5 opinion pattern: [Sentence] + と思う (to think that…).
  • Understand the state verb 知っています (to know) and its negative 知りません (do not know).
  • Master time duration counting with 間: 一時間 (1 hour), 三日間 (3 days), 一年間 (1 year).

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

These characters depict human thought and community bonds: 思 shows the heart/mind 心 reflecting upon a rice field/brain 田; 知 depicts an arrow 矢 shot straight from the mouth 口 (speaking knowledge swiftly and accurately); 名 depicts an evening crescent 夕 when darkness requires one to call out their mouth 口 (introducing one’s name); 間 depicts the sun 日 shining through the crack of closed double gates 門.

Japanese Form

思 (シ/おも-う), 知 (チ/し-る), 名 (メイ/ミョウ/な), 間 (カン/ケン/あいだ/ま)

English Meaning

Mind, Knowledge, Name, and Interval (To Think, To Know, Name, Interval/Between/Space)

Nepali Meaning

सोच, ज्ञान, नाम र समयावधि सम्बन्धी कान्जीहरू (सोच्नु/लाग्नु, थाहा पाउनु/चिन्नु, नाम, बीचमा/अवधि)

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Expressing Opinions: [Plain form sentence] + と思います (e.g., 明日は雨が降ると思います = I think it will rain tomorrow).
  2. Knowing a Fact: 知っています (I know) vs 知りません (I don’t know – NOT *知っていません!).
  3. Time Duration with 間: [Number] + 時間 (e.g., 二時間 = 2 hours); 一週間 (1 week); 一か月間 (1 month).
  4. Physical Between: A と B の間に (between A and B). Example: 机と椅子の間に (between desk and chair).

Formation

• 思: 9 strokes (field 田 [5 strokes] on top, heart 心 [4 strokes: left dot, curved hook, two inner dots] on bottom)

• 知: 8 strokes (arrow 矢 [5 strokes: tick, horizontal, horizontal cross, left sweep, right sweep] on left, mouth 口 [3 strokes] on right)

• 名: 6 strokes (evening 夕 [3 strokes] on top, mouth 口 [3 strokes] on bottom)

• 間: 12 strokes (gate 門 [8 strokes] enclosing sun 日 [4 strokes])

Usage

Expressing thoughts (いいと思います = I think it’s good), asking names (お名前は何ですか), knowing places (その店を知っていますか), and commute durations (電車で一時間かかります).

Important Notes

Readings of 名:

  • な (Kun-yomi): 名前 (なまえ – name)
  • めい (On-yomi): 有名 (ゆうめい – famous), 名所 (めいしょ – famous sight), 名字 (みょうじ – surname)

Readings of 間:

  • あいだ (Kun-yomi): AとBの間 (between A and B)
  • かん (On-yomi): 時間 (じかん – time/hour), 一年間 (いちねんかん – for one year)

Exceptions

Special compounds:

  • 間に合う (まにあう – to be in time – irregular ‘ma’ reading)
  • 人間 (にんげん – human being)
  • 思い出す (おもいだす – to recall/remember)
  • 知人 (ちじん – acquaintance)

Common Mistakes

Do not answer *知っていません when you don’t know something; always say 知りません. In 間, do not confuse it with 聞 (hear: ear inside gate).

Common Mistakes

  • Correct Form: いいえ、知りません (Iie, shirimasen).
  • Why: Japanese grammar requires simple negative 知りません when lacking knowledge.

Mistake 2

  • Incorrect: Confusing 間 (interval: sun 日 inside gate) with 聞 (hear: ear 耳 inside gate).
  • Correct Form: 間 has 日 (sun); 聞 has 耳 (ear).
  • Why: Sun measures time (間); ear receives sound (聞).
