Introduction
Lesson 19 unlocks the third pillar of Japanese verb conjugation: the た-form (Ta-form / plain past form). Because the Ta-form conjugates identically to the Te-form (just replacing -te/-de with -ta/-da), you can instantly form past experience sentences (〜たことがあります – I have experienced…), list representative actions (〜たり、〜たりします), and describe changes of state with なります (become).
Learning Objectives
- Master the Ta-form conjugation for Group 1, 2, and 3 verbs.
- Express past life experiences: [Verb た-form] + ことが あります (have ever done…).
- List representative, non-exhaustive actions: [Verb 1 た] り、[Verb 2 た] り します.
- Express transformation/change of state using [Adj / Noun] + に / く なります.
- Learn 30+ nouns for recreational activities, mountain climbing, hotels, and physical condition.

Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- Past Experience: [Verb た-form] + ことが あります (e.g. 富士山に登ったことがあります – I have climbed Mount Fuji).
- Listing Actions: [Verb 1 た] り、[Verb 2 た] り します (e.g. 日曜日は掃除したり、洗濯したりします – On Sundays I do things like cleaning and laundry).
- Becoming / Changing state: なります (become):
- い-adj: drop い, add くなります (寒くなります – becomes cold).
- な-adj: add になります (元気になります – becomes energetic).
- Noun: add になります (先生になります – become a teacher).
Formation
[Verb た-form] + ことが あります / ありません
[Verb 1 た] り、[Verb 2 た] り します / しました
[い-adj (drop い)] + くなります
[な-adj / Noun] + に なります
Usage
Job interviews (sharing previous experience), discussing travel memories, talking about weekend chores, chatting about weather changes.
Important Notes
Do NOT use 〜たことがあります for routine past actions done yesterday. It is reserved for notable life experiences (e.g. ‘Have you ever eaten fugu pufferfish?’).
Exceptions
The particle for staying at a hotel is に: ホテルに泊まります (hotel ni tomarimasu). Climbing a mountain is 山に登ります.
Common Mistakes
Nepali learners often omit り in the listing pattern (‘souji shita, sentaku shita’ ❌). Always pair each verb with り: ‘souji shitari, sentaku shitari shimasu’ ✔️.

How to Learn
Step 1: Understand
Notice the magic rule: Ta-form is identical to Te-form! (て -> た, で -> だ). Example: 行って -> 行った; 飲んで -> 飲んだ; 食べて -> 食べた.
Step 2: Memorize
Experience pattern: [Verb た-form] + ことが あります (affirmative) / ありません (negative).
Step 3: Practice
Remember that 〜たり〜たり connects representative activities and ends with します / しました.
Step 4: Speak
Become rule: い-adj loses い and adds くなる (あつくなる); な-adj and nouns add になる (きれいになる、いしゃになる).
Step 5: Read
Use おかげさまで when someone asks ‘O-genki desu ka?’ to show modest gratitude.
Step 6: Review
Complete all 20 MCQs below to verify your skills.
Memory Tips
If you know Te-form, you already know Ta-form! Just swap E for A!

- Incorrect: 今朝ご飯を食べたことがあります。(Kesa gohan o tabeta koto ga arimasu.)
- Correct Form: 今朝ご飯を食べました。(Kesa gohan o tabemashita.)
- Why: 〜たことがあります is reserved for milestone or historical life experiences, not routine actions done today.
Mistake 2
