Usage
Vital when falling ill in Japan, visiting internal medicine clinics (内科 – Naika), buying prescription drugs, or asking for sick leave at work/school.
Important Notes
- Always bring your Health Insurance Card (健康保険証 – Kenkou hokenshou) or My Number card to Japanese clinics; without it, you must pay 100% full cost upfront.
- In Japan, you drink medicine: (Kusuri o nomimasu), never ‘Kusuri o tabemasu’.
- Taking a hot bath (お風呂) raises body temperature, which is why Japanese doctors advise against bathing when running a fever.
Exceptions
When calling in sick to work/school, inform them:
Common Mistakes
Medicine is always ‘drunk’ (飲みます) in Japanese!

- Correct Form: The doctor/nurse says ‘Odaiji ni’ to the PATIENT. The patient says ‘Arigatou gozaimashita’.
