25 min Reading + Practice Grammar (Bunpou) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

In this lesson based on Minna no Nihongo Shokyu I Chapter 10, we master the foundational grammar structures: Place に N が あります・います / N は Place に あります・います / 上・下・前・うしろ・右・左・中・外・となり・近く・あいだ / N1 や N2 [など]. For Nepali learners, these sentence structures feel very natural because both Japanese and Nepali share the SOV (Subject-Object-Verb) grammatical architecture. We provide step-by-step Nepali explanations, practical vocabulary, conversation drills, and 20 JLPT-format MCQs.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand the core function of Place に N が あります・います / N は Place に あります・います / 上・下・前・うしろ・右・左・中・外・となり・近く・あいだ / N1 や N2 [など].
  • Construct affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences accurately.
  • Compare Japanese particles with Nepali grammatical case markers.
  • Apply these structures in realistic everyday conversations.
  • Score 90%+ on JLPT N5 grammar and reading comprehension questions.

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. あります (arimasu): Used strictly for inanimate objects, buildings, furniture, plants, trees, and abstract concepts (e.g. 机が あります, 木が あります, 時間が あります).
  2. います (imasu): Used strictly for living creatures that move independently: humans and animals (e.g. 学生が います, 犬が います, 猫が います).
  3. Place に N が あります/います: Introduces the existence of something at a location (There is a dog in the garden: 庭に 犬が います).
  4. N は Place に あります/います: Identifies where a known topic is located (The dog is in the garden: 犬は 庭に います).
  5. Positional construction: ‘[Noun 1] の [Position] に [Noun 2] が あります/います’ (e.g. 机の 上に 本が あります).
  6. N1 や N2 [など]: Lists two or three representative items among many, meaning ‘N1, N2, and so on’ (नेपालीमा: ‘र… आदि’).

Formation

Entity Category Verb (Affirmative) Verb (Negative) Examples
Inanimate (Things, Plants, Trees) あります (arimasu) ありません (arimasen) 本, 車, 机, 木, 花, ビル
Animate (Humans, Animals, Birds) います (imasu) いません (imasen) 人, 男の人, 女の人, 犬, 猫

Usage

Used for asking whether an item is in stock at a store (‘チリソース、ありますか’), describing room furniture, finding lost items, asking who is in an office, and giving directions inside buildings.

Important Notes

  1. Trees (木) and flowers (花) are living plants, but because they do NOT move on their own, Japanese grammar classifies them under あります (not います!).
  2. Question word for inanimate is 何が ありますか; for animate is だれが いますか.

Exceptions

When looking for animals at a pet shop or in nature, if the animal has died, it becomes an object (ありました).

Common Mistakes

Never say ‘あそこに 犬が あります’ (imasu must be used for dogs!). Never say ‘田中さんが あります’ (imasu for people!).
