Introduction

In Minna no Nihongo Lesson 24 Conversation, we learn the heartwarming culture of mutual favors and gratitude. You will master asking friends and colleagues for help using 手伝ってくれませんか (Won’t you help me?), using the giving/receiving verbs of benevolence (〜てあげます, 〜てもらいます, 〜てくれます), offering a helping hand with 手伝いましょうか (Shall I help?), and expressing heartfelt gratitude for kind deeds.

Learning Objectives

  • Ask favors courteously using [Verb て-form] + くれませんか.
  • Differentiate the 3 giving/receiving auxiliary verbs: 〜てあげる, 〜てもらう, 〜てくれる.
  • Offer assistance proactively using [Verb-stem] + ましょうか.
  • Express profound thanks for favors: 手伝ってくれて、ありがとう.
  • Solve 20 JLPT-format MCQs on giving/receiving favors and interpersonal etiquette.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Situational Concept: When someone does a favor for you (moves luggage, repairs a computer, teaches language), they ‘give you an action’. The giver is marked by が, and you say: 「[Person] が [Verb て] くれました」. When asking a favor: 「〜てくれませんか」.

Japanese Form

A: ミラーさん、引っ越しは 全部 終わりましたか。

B: いいえ、まだです。荷物が 重くて、大変なんです。

A: じゃ、あした 手伝いましょうか。

B: え、本当ですか。すみません、手伝って くれませんか。

A: ええ、いいですよ。車も 出しますね。

B: ありがとうございます! 助かります!

English Meaning

A: Mr. Miller, is your moving completely finished?

B: No, not yet. The luggage is heavy, and it’s quite tough.

A: Well then, shall I help you tomorrow?

B: Oh, really? Excuse me, but won’t you please help me?

A: Sure, of course! I’ll bring my car too.

B: Thank you so much! That’s a huge lifesaver!

Nepali Meaning

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Offer favor: [Verb-stem] + ましょうか (Shall I…?).
  2. Request favor: [Verb て-form] + くれませんか / もらえませんか.
  3. Someone did for me: [Person] が わたしに [Verb て] くれました.
  4. I received a favor from: わたしは [Person] に [Verb て] もらいました.
  5. Grateful exclamation: 助かります!(たすかります).

Formation

Giving / Receiving Form Structure Meaning (Nepali)
〜てあげます わたしは 友達に 貸してあげました मैले साथीलाई सापटी दिएँ
〜てくれます 山田さんが 手伝ってくれました यामादाजीले मलाई सहयोग गरिदिनुभयो
〜てもらいます 先生に 教えてもらいました मैले शिक्षकबाट सिकाइ पाएँ
〜てくれませんか 手伝ってくれませんか मलाई सहयोग गरिदिनुहुन्न र?

Usage

Crucial for daily cooperative living: moving apartments, learning language exchanges, borrowing tools, and workplace teamwork.

Important Notes

  • Avoid using ‘〜てあげます’ directly to superiors (teachers, boss); it sounds patronizing, implying ‘I am doing you a generous favor’.
  • When someone helps you out of a tough situation, say: 「助かりました!(Tasukarimashita – You saved me!)」.
  • Remember to treat friends who helped you move to lunch or a thank-you dinner.

Exceptions

When asking superiors for a favor, use the higher polite form: 〜てくださいませんか or 〜ていただけませんか.

Common Mistakes

Saying ‘先生がわたしに教えてあげました’. When someone does a favor for YOU, you MUST use ‘〜てくれました’!

Common Mistakes

Mistake 1

  • Incorrect: Saying ‘山田さんが私に手伝ってあげました’.
  • Correct Form: Say ‘山田さんが私を手伝ってくれました’ (Tetsudatte kuremashita).
  • Why: When someone performs an action for YOUR benefit, you must use ‘kuremashita’, never ‘agemashita’.

Mistake 2

  • Incorrect: Saying ‘先生に手伝ってあげます’.
  • Correct Form: Say ‘先生、お手伝いしましょうか’ (O-tetsudai shimashou ka).
  • Why: ‘〜てあげる’ sounds arrogant and patronizing when spoken directly to superiors.
