Detailed Explanation
Basic Rule
- Polite Request: [Verb て-form] + ください (e.g. ちょっと待ってください – Please wait a moment).
- Offering Help: [Verb ます-stem] + ましょうか (e.g. 手伝いましょうか – Shall I help you?).
- Ongoing Action: [Verb て-form] + います (e.g. 雨が降っています – It is raining).
- Te-form Group Rules:
- Group 1: う・つ・る -> って; む・ぶ・ぬ -> んで; く -> いて (行く -> 行って); ぐ -> いで; す -> して.
- Group 2: drop ます, add て (たべて、あけて).
- Group 3: します -> して; 来ます -> きて.
Formation
[Verb て-form] + ください (Please do…)
[Verb ます-stem] + ましょうか (Shall I do…?)
[Verb て-form] + います (Action in progress)
Usage
Asking for assistance, giving driving/walking directions, asking someone to repeat or speak slowly in Japanese class, handling luggage.
Important Notes
開けます (akemasu – open) and 閉めます (shimemasu – close) are for physical doors, windows, and books. For lights, electrical power, and computers, use つけます (turn on) and 消します (turn off).
Exceptions
The verb 行きます (ikimasu) is an irregular exception in Group 1: it becomes 行って (itte), NOT ‘iite’!
Common Mistakes
Nepali learners often say ‘Denki o akete kudasai’ ❌ for turning on a light. Electricity requires ‘Denki o tsukete kudasai’ ✔️!
