25 min Reading + Practice Reading (Dokkai) N5 – Beginner

Introduction

Welcome to Lesson 02! In this lesson, you will master reading descriptions of personal belongings, lost-and-found notices (落とし物・忘れ物), gift cards, and product tags. In Japan, lost property offices (遺失物取扱所) and notice boards are everywhere. Knowing how to read demonstrative pronouns (これ, それ, あれ), colors, and ownership markers (〜の) in short notices is an indispensable JLPT N5 reading skill.

Learning Objectives

  • Interpret demonstrative pronouns (これ・それ・あれ・どれ) in written context.
  • Read lost-and-found notices at train stations and schools.
  • Identify owner attributes using the possessive particle の (e.g. 田中さんの傘).
  • Extract product details (color, origin, material) from gift tags and descriptions.

Lesson Contents

Concept / Meaning

Reading texts about items uses the Ko-So-A-Do demonstrative system: これ (this near writer), それ (that near reader), あれ (that over there). Lost-and-found notices specify what was lost (落とした物), where (場所), when (日時), and how to claim it.

Japanese Form

これは [誰] の [物] ですか。いいえ、それは [誰] のではありません。[色/特徴] の [物] です。

English Meaning

Reading notices about personal belongings, lost items, and gift descriptions.

Nepali Meaning

व्यक्तिगत सामान, हराएका वस्तुका सूचनाहरू र उपहार विवरणहरू पढ्ने र बुझ्ने सीप।

Detailed Explanation

Basic Rule

  1. Ownership Formula: [Person] + の + [Item] indicates possession (e.g. 私の鍵 = my key).
  2. Demonstrative Matching: これ refers to the item directly mentioned; それ refers to the item with the other party; あれ refers to an item known to both.
  3. Lost Property Headers: Look for words like 「落とし物」「忘れ物」「お尋ね」 on notice boards.

Formation

• [Item] + は + [Color/Size] + です。

• [Date] + に + [Place] + で + [Item] + を + 落としました (lost… on [date] at [place]).

• 心当たりのある方は [Contact] まで (Those who recognize this, please contact…).

Usage

Reading school bulletin boards, train station bulletin notices, souvenir store tags, and lost item reports.

Important Notes

Possessive pronoun substitution: ‘私の傘’ can be shortened to ‘私のです’ (It is mine). The second noun is omitted when clear from context.

Exceptions

When asking ‘Whose is this?’, the question word だれ takes の: 「これは誰のですか」(Whose is this?).

Common Mistakes

Nepali learners sometimes mix up この (requires noun: この本) and これ (standalone: これは本です). In reading notices, pay attention to whether a noun follows immediately.

Examples

Example 1

  • Japanese: これは誰の傘ですか。それは私の傘です。
  • Reading: これは だれの かさですか。それは わたしの かさです。
  • English: Whose umbrella is this? That is my umbrella.
